Config 2021: Figma platformed the community I built

The falsifiable questionDid the community-through-making thesis — less talk, more people in the file — hold up in front of the industry it came from?

Measured and reproducible withheld: community size claims are not independently verifiable today, and a community is not a rerunnable experiment.

Baseline

Design community in 2020 defaulted to conversation: panels, Twitter threads, empty Clubhouse rooms. The bet was that shared making — multiplayer files, play, iteration — would bind people where talk could not.

Method

Founded #FigmaAndChill, a global BIPOC design community organized around making together in multiplayer files rather than talking about design. Grew it to a Config 2021 talk: 'a catalyst to connection, community, & culture.'

Measured result

The talk is published on Figma's official YouTube channel — the platform itself validated and distributed the work. The Config speaker archive independently corroborates the bio: engineer at Vessel Health, Rice University bioengineering, creator of #FigmaAndChill.

Where it broke

The canonical config.figma.com talk page has since 404'd — the durable receipts are the YouTube video and the archived speaker page. And the community's Clubhouse-era home declined with the platform; the thesis outlived the venue, the venue did not.
